Sarah Vowell appeared on The Daily Show last year to promote The Wordy Shipmates, her set of essays on Puritan America. She was talking about the history of Rhode Island when the host suddenly interrupted her. “You’re very smart,” Stewart said dreamily, gazing across the table at her. She really is. She’s also the author of five books on American culture, as well as a frequent contributor to NPR, Salon, Time, San Francisco Weekly and The New York Times opinion page. Along with all these bona fides, she’s legitimately and wonderfully strange, with a sunny, low-key sense humor that lights up even the darkest subject matter — look no further than Assassination Vacation, her book about road tripping to the sites of three presidential assassinations. Between all that and her totally sweet bowl-cut, we may just look at her with the same puppy eyes that Jon Stewart did. She’ll be in the Silver Eagle Suite at UNT’s University Union at 8 p.m. November 9 to read from her new book on Hawaii, Unfamiliar Fishes, and take a few audience questions. Tickets will be $20 for the general public, $10 for UNT staff, faculty and alumni, and free for UNT students.
