What if, instead of getting a jump on your holiday shopping or looking up oyster stuffing recipes online, you spent this Saturday getting lots of fresh air and exercise and, you know, fighting cancer? Why not in a luau and beer garden? Seriously — a luau. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s second annual Pineapple Classic 5k in Mesquite this weekend is a 5K race with multiple surprise obstacles along the way. Teams are challenged to carry a pineapple with them through the course. Family and friends are invited to watch the races and attend the luau. Groups should consider joining as a team to pump up the fun. Costumes are encouraged, and consider yourself warned: You will get dirty. The race begins at 9 a.m. at Double D Ranch, 12809 Eastgate Drive. Call 972-996-5928 or visit dallaswinterpineappleclassic.org for information. Registration fees are $75 per person, $150 for a two-person team and $250 for a four-person team.

Will you step up to support Dallas Observer this year?
At the Dallas Observer, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $14,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of the Dallas Observer, now’s the time to give back.
