Never fear, oh young, hipster parents: The Polyphonic Spree’s Holiday Extravaganza has returned. After keeping a relatively low profile in 2010, Spree leader Tim DeLaughter has burst back into the region’s consciousness in multiple ways. A buzzed-about band (Preteen Zenith) and a revamped record label (Good Records Recordings) are just a couple of the pursuits that’s kept DeLaughter busy. While those outlets have certainly brought smiles to many faces, it’s likely that his collective’s beloved holiday happening will induce more grins in a six-hour window than the previous few months combined. The use of “extravaganza” in the event’s title isn’t a mere ploy to be ironically folksy by any means. For a quick example: How often will a DJ hit the ones and twos as an opening act for a selection of animals from the Dallas Zoo? The answer: not very often in regular-people-world, but in the symphonic-rock Xanadu of the Spree, the combining of seasonal cheer, music, live reindeer and charity makes for the ideal, holiday family night out.
