We’ve all heard it before. Every year, a round, bearded man in a red polyester suit and pointy black boots makes his trip around the globe. He drops through the chimneys of the children on his “nice list,” slips a few presents under the Christmas tree, snacks on a few cookies, then leaves without ever being seen. Countless children’s stories, movies and plays give children another reason to believe in Santa Claus, but it wasn’t until 1897 that we found out the truth about Santa Claus. Inspired by a true story, Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus is a play about 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon’s letter to the New York Sun, asking whether the jolly old elf really exist. The response by editor Frank Church became the most reprinted editorial in history. Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus opens at 1 p.m. December 14 and 15, and begins at 7 p.m. December 16 and 17 at the Plaza Theater in Garland, 521 W. State St. Admission ranges from $6 to $9.
