Oh, the Fury

New York artist Kate Gilmore’s Girl Fight isn’t about ripping someone’s weave out or clawing runs into someone’s clothing and/or face. It’s more like a commentary via video installation on the sometimes laughable struggle within one’s self and with society when it comes to just being a girl. Exhibition curator Matthew Drutt wrote of the artist, “Subjecting herself to precarious situations while wearing clothing incongruous with her circumstances, Gilmore persistently and methodically labors onward, sometimes negotiating her own sculptural tableaus as she encounters life’s many perils in heels, dresses and makeup.” Hammering herself out of plaster, breaking through wood and getting tomatoes thrown at her, Gilmore works through artistic tribulations with comedic grace while demanding appropriate attention to the inherent issue. Kate Gilmore: Girl Fight runs through December 13 in the University of North Texas Art Gallery, one block west of Mulberry and Welch streets in Denton.
