Immigration these days, especially in this great state, is a loaded subject. People are passionate about the pros and cons, who is living in the house next to them, who’s working beside them. An interesting vantage point on the argument comes from gallery owner and artist Van Ditthavong, who escaped Laos re-education camps as a child with his aunt and uncle in order to join his parents in the U.S. His Portrait of the American Dream takes on immigration through “themes of assimilation, hard work and opportunity” but with a focus on keeping it from reading too heavy-handed. The show opens with a reception from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday and is available for viewing or purchase during regular theater hours through August 6 at the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village.
