Prior to the release of third and latest album The Clearing, Raleigh, North Carolina trio Bowerbirds were known for their arid country folk, fitting given singer-accordionist Beth Tacular and singer-guitarist Philip Moore came together watching birds on a nature preserve in South Carolina. The daily pressure of touring unwound their relationship prior to finishing 2009’s Upper Air, but they reconnected for their latest, recorded partially at Bon Iver’s studio in Wisconsin. There remains a tender delicacy at the core of the songs, but the overall tone’s darker, clearly weighing the emotional turmoil of the past few years and counterbalancing the sweetness of their new approach.
