The Oyster Princess is a crazy acid trip of a silent film. It’s a German silent movie that features a heroine who makes those girls on My Super Sweet Sixteen look austere, features a foxtrot that must be one of the weirdest dance scenes ever captured on film, and it’s a biting indictment of American consumerism, which apparently was a topic of international concern even a century ago. The addition of Austin’s Bee vs. Moth, which provides the live soundtrack, makes this screening at the Texas Theatre, 231 W Jefferson Blvd., an entirely trippy affair. The band, described as a cross between Sonic Youth and Tijuana Brass, gives the film an air of extra lunacy, pretty much making it the polar opposite of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Casablanca score performance going on across town tonight.
