Keep Dallas Observer Free
We’re aiming to raise $10,000 by April 26. Your support ensures Dallas Observer can continue watching out for you and our community. No paywall. Always accessible. Daily online and weekly in print.
Just because you have to work through Friday, doesn’t mean that A.) you can’t get an early start on fun tonight, and B.) you can’t strategically scope out your three-day party plan now. There’s so much great stuff going on: Somebody left festivals scattered all over town (don’t trip), there are free outdoor movies, fireworks, karaoke bashes, a party boat and a margarita celebration. So make a plan, share this list with your friends and click the event titles for more information. And if you see a girl cannonballing off the side of a party barge, make sure and say hi. We should be friends. Now let’s do this!
Thursday 5.24
Stiletto Stampede — Remember that time you dashed a quarter mile in your favorite pumps to reach the taco trailer before he sealed up the queso vat? This is like that, but instead of late night snack shame you’ll be sprinting to battle breast cancer. As we all know, cancer sucks. It’s the worst. If running in high heels will help make it go away then I say we do it. All of us. Even the dudes.
Kristen Chenoweth — Unless that petition goes through, GCB is cancelled. You can still spend this evening with she show’s sprightliest cast member, the always charming Kristen Chenoweth, as she reminds you how much power can emote from a tiny package.
Erica Felicella speaks at Kettle Art — This girl made my brain explode two weekends ago when she spent 48 hours in a plexiglass box in Oak Cliff. She didn’t sleep. She wore a catheter. She scribbled a mantra. And she did all of this to explore her full range of human emotions. Tonight she speaks at Kettle Art, so go and learn about a complex experience that few of us will ever know first hand.
Hard Luck Karaoke at the Double Wide — I get nervous recommending this event because it’s almost too much fun, but hell, it’s a disco tribute night. How can you go to bed early when Oliver Peck and Josh Hammertimez want to honor Donna Summer and Robin Gibb? You can’t. Suck it up and pound black coffee and Emergen-C tomorrow.Follow the Mixmaster on Twitter and Facebook.
Friday 5.25
Crowning Ceremony for Miss Gay USofA — It takes a lot of strength to stand tall in evening wear, sparkle through the flash bulbs (they still use those, right?) during the interview round and rise above the pack in the talent competition. But these contests aren’t afraid; they’ve got balls.
City Arts Festival Kicks Off, Screens a Free Outdoor Movie — This three-day long fest is a big one for Fair Park. If you want shoppable art, there’s a juried show featuring 150 different artists. Also, there’s art cars, a culinary showcase and a free outdoor screening of American Graffiti on Friday night at 9 p.m. and Grease on Saturday night at 9 p.m. It’s free, guys!
Urgh! A Music War Screens at Texas Theatre — This movie, screening in 35 mm, is going to blow your pants off. Composed of live footage ripped from the early ’80s punk scenes in London and Los Angeles, this is the ultimate rock doc — and yes, John Doe does look hot in it, thanks for asking. Want more? How about a live show by the Nervous Curtains, Peopleodian and After Hours with George Quartz?

Saturday 5.26
Journeys Backyard Barbeque Tour — This event is free! They’re having skateboard, BMX, wakeboard (Wakeboard? At the mall? But… how…?) and motocross athletes perform demos, beginning at noon at Grapevine Mills Mall. There’s music by P.O.D. and also a battle of the bands.
Dallas Neo-Classical Ballet — For its first full-length season production, the DNCB tells the crushingly beautiful story of the Moon Princess, a 10th Century Japanese folk tale.
Homegrown — Ume, Octopus Project, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, visual artists like Nevada Hill, Frank Campagna and the Humano collective, and shopping at Dowdy Studio, Strut and more –all in one park? Is it my birthday?
DFW International Festival — Dance along with music from 25 countries on four stages while you glut your way through food vendors.
Take to the Skies Airfest — This family-friendly fest and will leave you staring directly up as MiG 17 fighters, T28 Trojans and an Extra do crazy plane tricks overhead.

Sunday 5.26
Float — Because there’s nothing better than a party boat, your friends at the Observer have organized Float. Austin’s own James McMurtry and all-around Texan Ray Wylie Hubbard will musically sooth your hangover as you splash and float around on Lake Lewisville. There will be beer tents, food vendors and lots of chillaxing.
Margarita Meltdown — Here’s the deal with hangovers: slap a little citrus on it, bathe the thing in tequila, catch a nice breeze and you’ll be healed. The Bishop Arts District encourages you to drink lots of margaritas from lots of restaurants in a street party environment this afternoon. It’s exactly what you need.
Fort Worth Opera Festival — For the non-hungover, this is a good choice. When’s the next time you’ll get to see the Marriage of Figaro anyway? It’s one of Mozart’s good ones, so catch it at Bass Hall.
Carry the Load — Support your troops, for realsies. This marathon encourages folks from the community to walk or run in honor of those who have served our country; some participants optionally weigh themselves down with heavy things while doing so. It last 20 hours and 12 minutes.
Double Wide’s Parking Lot Pool Party — There’s nothing classier than chillin’ with a tallboy in a kiddie pool in front of a bar named after a trailer. And for this, Double Wide, we salute you.
Karaoke at The Goat — Carmen heads up this curated stab at karaoke every Sunday at the Goat, but it really goes off on a three-day weekend.
Monday 5.28
Blackfriar Pub — Not many venues are catering to Memorial Day this year, but Blackfriar has your back. They’ll be hosting a little parking lot party action with $2 tacos, $5 summer beers and $7 beeritas, also live music by Petty Theft, which is a greatest name any Tom Petty tribute band has ever drummed up.
Dallas Symphony Show with Fireworks — It’s an annual event at Flagpole hill and it ends in a fireworks show. Take a blanket and hear some lovely free classical music. Then, pyrotechnics!Follow the Mixmaster on Twitter and Facebook.
