On Monday, the Audit Bureau of Circulations will release its spring circulation numbers for major daily newspapers. But today’s online edition of Editor & Publisher has a sneak peek at those numbers, and they aren’t good:
“According to industry sources, overall daily circulation for the six month[s] ending March 2007 is expected to sink approximately 2.5% while Sunday is forecasted to drop around 3.0%.”
But, according to the same story, The Dallas Morning News has surpassed the national average, with the daily edition showing at least a 5 percent decline — joining the likes of The Miami Herald, The San Diego Union-Tribune, The Austin American-Statesmen and a handful of other moderate- to large-sized papers. This decline in circulation will likely be addressed tomorrow, when Belo Corp. releases its first quarter earnings and “other matters of interest to shareholders and analysts” at 7:30 a.m. –Robert Wilonsky
