One week ago this morning, KNON’s Warren Harris passed along the news that local radio icon Linwood Henderson, better known as Cuzzin’ Linnie, died in his sleep after a lengthy illness. Henderson, long considered the disc jockey who broke Dallas radio’s color barrier by being the first to play soul music on a rock-n-pop station, will be buried tomorrow: Harris sends word that the funeral will be held at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Living God, 3711 Biglow Drive. There will also be a public viewing tonight, from 7 to 8, at Golden Gate Funeral Home.
But Henderson died “I wouldn’t say broke,” as Harris puts it, “but well under-funded.” Which is why Harris and others are “trying to raise enough to cover expenses for the funeral.” he explains. Hence Sunday’s event at Poor David’s Pub, which begins at 5 p.m.: “a celebration of the life and legacy of Cuzzin’ Linnie.” Admission will be free, but donations will be accepted.
Says Harris, “From what I understand, we have a lot of artists planning on attending,” among them some local R&B icons who have suggested they will put in an appearance. “Golden Gate’s working with us,” Harris says, “and whatever we wind up raising Sunday we’ll hand over to Golden Gate to handle expenses.”
