Fresh off a week of recent Dallas escapades, Shepard Fairey has been cast in an upcoming episode of The Simpsons called “Exit Through the Kwik-E-Mart.” Now in its 23rd season (Wha-hoo!) the city of Springfield is faced with a new scourge: Bart Simpson turned rebellious street artist. His muse? Homer, of course.
While stenciling his father’s image around town, Bart awkwardly encounters a pack of more established graffiti artists (Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal). Instead of fighting for street justice, the crew encourages Bart to nurture his new habit and even helps him secure a gallery show.
On his website Fairey had this to say about the gig: “Part of being on The Simpsons, is you’re being honored as a reference point in culture, but you also can’t be too sensitive about that part of culture being made fun of…There’s irony that comes with something outsider becoming insider. And they do a great job of examining that.”
