So say these 29 pages that’ll be reviewed this afternoon by the council’s Quality of Life Committee. In short, city staff says code compliance is faced with three significant challenges: Some parts of the city are more troublesome than others; some have “more complex nuisance issues” than others (including “open and vacant structures” and homeless camps); and it ain’t easy to stay on top of these things with dwindling resources so spread out.

Which is why it’s dividing the city into the so-called target areas (maps available in the doc), consolidating the Rapid Mow and Rapid Intensified Inspection programs and turning its attention to the high weeds in South Dallas, Cadillac Heights and West Dallas. There will also be something called Trash Attack — that’s one nifty logo, kinda Captain Marvel in reverse — which will have separate routes that are “being set
up to monitor and abate habitual illegal dumpsites.” Meanwhile, the Rapid Intensified Inspection Program will still be out and about on weekends cracking down on garage sales.

And now, per the briefing, fun facts!

During the typical year, our crews:

  • Mow and/or clean 23,572 lots
  • Secure 1,874 open and vacant structures
  • Perform 1,049 Heavy Clean Operations
  • Abate 5,250 graffiti cases

High volume of vacant lots and vacant homes

  • Estimated 19,000 vacant lots in the City of Dallas

Staffing Levels

  • There are approximately 1,100 cases per
    Nuisance Abatement Crew
