A Dallas family makes the cover of the new Fortune: Lindsay and Zach Mayer, among those singled out as the “high earners, not rich yet” — or HENRYs, get it? — who would vehemently dispute the notion that just because you make more than $250,000, you’re wealthy and ought to pay higher taxes. Because the Mayers — Zach’s an attorney; Lindsay’s a senior manager at Avaya — “feel stretched on $500,000 a year,” note writers Shawn Tully with Joan Caplin, who acknowledge that while “it’s hard to weep for families that earn more than 98% of American households,” the HENRYs are getting “getting a bad rap from those who lump them in with America’s conspicuously wealthy.”
Lindsay, whose new side business making and selling fancy diaper bags has begun to generate some plush pub, says it’s the $2,200 a month spent on child care that’s “the real killer. … We’ve achieved so much. We can’t understand why we’re still worrying about money.” –Robert Wilonsky
