Harriet Miers’ SMU yearbook pic from 1967 — and I gotta say, kinda cute.
Hey, looks like Harriet Miers won’t have to make the trip from Dallas to D.C. after all. Apparently, it doesn’t matter if Congress commands you to testify before a House Judiciary Committee on Thursday investigating the U.S. attorney firings. What does matter is whether the president’s your pal: George Bush today told the former White House counsel — and Dallas city council member — that subpoena be damned, she does not have to testify in front of the panel tomorrow.
Actually, White House Counsel Fred Fielding told Miers’ attorney to tell her to stay put. “Ms. Miers has absolute immunity from compelled congressional testimony as to matters occurring while she was a senior adviser to the president,” Fielding wrote in a letter to Miers’ lawyer, George T. Manning. NBC, however, says Miers may show Thursday anyway, just to say she ain’t sayin’ nothin’. –Robert Wilonsky
