Earlier this week, The News reported that former Cowboy and smack-talking DirecTV fairy Deion Sanders was hoping to break into the education business. He was just awaiting state Board of Ed approval to open two charter schools in DFW — one in Oak Cliff, the second in Fort Worth — that would join a growing number of public charters that rather than shun athletics focus on them, hoping to use sports to teach leadership (and maybe win some titles? You think?).
Well, Sanders’s classroom-and-chalk-line dreams have come true. The board just approved his charter (and several others), clearing the way for the schools to open its doors to what Sanders and his partners say will be between 600 and 1,000 kids, exactly none of whom will graduate knowing how to make an open-field tackle.
