As is their wont, some open carry activists staged a protest that didn’t make very much sense on Sunday.
A version of open carry has passed the Texas Legislature. Governor Greg Abbott has promised to sign it. Many activists are mad because Texas’ new open carry law requires those openly carrying handguns to have a concealed handgun permit. Kory Watkins, the leader of Open Carry Tarrant County, accused the Legislature of treason and suggested that those who passed the watered down open carry measure be “hung from the tree of liberty.”
As of today, there is no version of open carry that’s legal. That’s why Come and Take It Texas showed up at Dallas Police headquarters with their mobile “Free Open Carry Zone.”

Honestly, the guys could be doing anything in there, but according to the group, they are carrying the modern pistols Texas law currently mandates be concealed. Other than the interactions seen in videos posted by the activists there were no incidents or arrests, according to DPD.
Texas’ woefully inadequate version of open carry will become law January 1, 2016.
