A Friend of Unfair Park sends word today that Scott Streater, who’s done important, top-notch and well-circulated work covering the environmental beat for both the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and its Planet DFW blog, is shuffling off to Colorado, where his missus got a new gig. Streater, who’s been feted by the Society of Environmental Journalists, tells Unfair Park today he’ll continue to freelance for the paper, but he won’t be replaced — leaving the smog-choked readers of local dailies to fend for ourselves.

Notes our environmentally minded Friend: “The Dallas Morning News has not had a full time environmental reporter since Randy Lee Loftis became an editor several years ago. Channel 8 fired the last TV environmental beat reporter, Don Wall, about the same time. I guess this means all of our environmental problems must be solved.”

Huzz … cough, cough, cough.

Jim Schermbeck, on the board of Downwinders At Risk, tells UP of the paper’s decision not to replace Streater: “This is a very short-sighted decision with lots of serious long-term consequences. Right now, with everything we know — and everything we don’t — it’s like eliminating the cop shop reporter, or the city hall reporter… oh, wait. Anyway, not having a full-time watchdog on these issues will cost us money and health.” –Robert Wilonsky
