Tonight is the one-year anniversary of The Cavern’s weekly mashup of rock bands, DJs and visual artists, so event creator John Mudd has assembled an even better lineup than usual to mark the occasion. In fact, three of the acts are up for Dallas Observer Music Awards this year: Vega for Electronica/Dance, and Redsean and Select for DJ.
Playing along with the three DOMA nominees are Ishi, Hoyotoho and DJ FakeBeat, Mudd says. Avenue Arts owner Edward Ruiz will handle visual projections and LCD lights, and painter Josh Judkins will have art on display. Despite what The Cavern’s Web site says, however, The Burning Hotels will not play.
Mudd is hoping tonight’s anniversary party will give the event a shot in the arm, attendance-wise. Otherwise, it may no longer be a viable weekly event.
“I don’t think it’s picked up the way I thought it would have,” he
says. “For it being free–especially considering that there are $2
you-call-its and $2 wells–it hasn’t really picked up. I’m going to
ride it out this summer and see how it goes, then maybe go to a
monthly.”
When the event started last year, it averaged 40 to 70 people per
night; now, attendance is down to 25 to 35, he estimates. Mudd hopes to
get it consistently back up to at least 40 or 50 people.
Though Detour usually is free, tonight’s talent comes at a price,
especially for the fashionably late; cover is $6 before 11 p.m. and $8
after.
