Firebird Restaurant Group announced a new expansion late last week. Owner Mike Karns is responsible for Meso Maya, La Ventana, Snuffer’s and scores of El Fenix locations among others. Now he’ll have two new restaurants in Fort Worth: A third Meso Maya and a new concept called Tortaco are expected to open next year.

We’re familiar with Meso Maya, which first opened in North Dallas with freshly made tortillas, killer moles and some of the best margaritas in Dallas. A second location then opened downtown, next door to the original El Fenix location. That’s also where those same handmade tortillas were used to build tacos for a backyard taqueria named La Ventana, which will have three locations, including one in the Dallas Farmers Market, by the end of the year.

The new, two-story Meso Maya location will be located at 604 Main St. in the Kress Building in downtown Fort Worth — an area that’s seen huge restaurant growth in recent years. Residents of the Kress building’s loft apartments will soon bathe in the scents of toasting masa and warming refried beans.

Tortaco will join the slew of new construction along 7th Street. The release doesn’t give much information about the place but notes the casual restaurant will feature a full bar and signature cocktails. Something tells me this will turn out to be a great place to eat a torta and pound an avocado margarita.
