It was about a month ago now that we eagerly first passed along the news of Danny Balis’ upcoming solo debut, Too Much Living, which is set for a Tuesday, September 1, release.

Today, though, Balis passes along his disc’s first single, “Tethered,” for DC9 readers as a free download. And, after the jump, you can–and should–take advantage of the offer.

But, before you do, check out the cover art (see right) and make sure to keep an ear out for a lyric about things being OK, even “if a sparrow dies.” Coincidences? Hardly–especially considering that Balis wrote the entirety of Too Much Living in the weeks and months immediately following his close friend and collaborator Carter Albrecht’s death. Subtle tributes like these litter the disc, and lend a good deal of insight into the songwriting process for Balis on this impressive release.

Yesterday, Balis released the above track to KHYI 95.3-FM The Range, where he hopes it’ll catch on as a request-line single. Given the classicism of the song’s direction, subject matter and vocal style, it’d be a shame if it didn’t, really.
