Gotta say, for the first time in a long time, the MTV Video Music Awards were pretty awesome this year. The annual event, which aired last night, had become pretty stale in recent years, as MTV has kowtowed to teen and tween demand, celebrating the likes of Justin Bieber, et al.

Make no mistake: Bieber still was honored at this year’s affair, winning Best Male Video for “U Smile,” beating out Kanye West, Cee-Lo Green, Bruno Mars and Eminem for the honor. Predictably, he thanked Jesus.

But there were still some other cool moments surrounding that one: Lady Gaga dressed in drag and staying in character all night (even during performances, presentations and award acceptance speeches) as an ex-boyfriend of hers was pretty great; Beyonce’s turn-to-the-side-and-rub-her-belly move announcing her pregnancy at the end of her performance was pretty adorable, only to be topped by the reaction it drew from Jay-Z and Kanye, who acted like evn they didn’t know; and, of course, it was pretty hilarious to see Tyler, The Creator, named Best New Artist earlier in the night for the video for his song “Yonkers,” clapping along and enjoying Bruno Mars’ performance, considering, y’know, that he threatens to “stab Bruno Mars in his goddamn esophagus” in that same song.

For those of you counting at home, there were a number of area-related moments in the broadcast, too: Grand Prairie’s Own Selena Gomez co-hosted the pre-show; Gomez “interviewed”  her Colleyville-raised BFF Demi Lovato during that; Westlake’s Own Joe Jonas co-introduced Chris Brown’s heavily lip-synched performance; Gomez and her cast-in-bronze boyfriend Bieber smooched on-camera before he won the Best Male Video award and Gomez presented noted Gomez fan Tyler, The Creator his Best New Artist award.

Things got pretty meta, too, when comedian Kevin Hart shared a backstage clip of Joe Jonas in his dressing room with Kreayshawn, with Rebecca Black and Cali Swag District in there to teach him how to Dougie.

Oh, Dallas. You’re really on the up-and-up.

Especially considering that we haven’t even mentioned the best Dallas-related MTV VMA moment yet. What could that be?

Oh, y’know, just this announcement: Former Garland resident Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-head will return to MTV on October 27. Boo-yah. Check out the below sneak peak of the first episode, as shown at the San Diego Comic Con earlier this year.
