Gorilla Vs. Bear Festival II

Hard to believe we’re almost a year removed from the first Gorilla Vs. Bear Festival, which took place in an ice-cold Granada Theater during the hottest part of last summer. You can expect this year to be another oasis, both physically and musically. Though, no bands have been announced, the success of last year hints that this event will be even bigger and better. Place your bets: Who will be the first act announced?

Perhaps one of the worst names in terms of Google searches, Murfreesboro, Tennessee’s Glossary has put out seven full length records without the help anyone else other than the band members and their fans. One fan in particular, Centro-matic’s Mark Hedman, reached out to make sure this show on Sunday isn’t overlooked, which is as big a recommendation as you can get around here.

The Kessler and Dallas Zoo have teamed up for this family-friendly
event. Sure, these are local tribute acts, but when’s the last time you
were able to hear the Beatles while looking at a tiger? Kudos to The
Kessler for making this event happen.

My favorite Jojo song is the one that guy from Grizzly Bear sings. Gotta be honest, though. I’m partial to her version.
Solar Powered Music Festival

Looking for a place to see The Romantics, The English Beat, Jonathan
Tyler and the Northern Lights, Ishi, That 1 Guy and Whiskey Folk
Ramblers? This free event will take place on the banks of the Trinity
River, which is probably the coolest thing about this show.
Ramblin’ Jack Elliot
Friday, June 29, at Poor David’s Pub, $27
Rambin’ Jack is a national treasure. He’ll be 81 one month after this
show, a testament to his incredible wherewithal. He studied under Woody
Guthrie in the ’50s and has been on tour ever since. See him before you can’t anymore, though he seems like he’s
got decades left to go.

Incredible that this band is still on tour. I’m told their shows are fun, at least.

This show should make a brutal way to end your summer. Lamb of
God has grown more popular with the release of each album, peaking with
their 2009 album, Wrath. They are touring in support of this year’s Resolution.
State Fair of Texas Lineup

I was recently barbecued in
the comments, for failing to mention a show at The Kessler from Rebirth
Brass Band in a weekend roundup post. It was a fair criticism, as the
band has a Grammy under their belts. I bit my tongue when I thought,
“I’ll write about them when they return in a few months.” Sure enough,
they’re one of the first bands playing at the State Fair this year on
October 6, just a few hours before Ruthie Foster. Check out the full lineup here.
