Once again, not too hopping an evening as far as music goes, considering it’s Super Bowl week and all. But tonight’s shows are especially solid — or, rather, there’s one that is. Turns out Free Energy has canceled its show at the Loft tonight. Still, sweet video from them we’ve posted here above, huh?
Tokyo Police Club, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and TV Torso at the Granada Theater
Besides
having a super cool name, Canada’s Tokyo Police Club plays some of the
hippest indie pop around. Although it’s sometimes a reflex response to
bemoan critical darlings such as TPC, it’s pretty difficult to find much
fault in the music of Dave Monks and crew. Same goes for Missouri’s
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, a quartet with a gimmicky moniker
that also plays quirky pop-rock with style and vigor. Add in the low-fi
charm of Austin’s TV Torso and you have one of the most stylistically
similar — not to mention talented — triple-bills in recent memory.
Free Energy, The Postelles and The Background at The Loft
Philadelphia-by-way-of-Minnesota
band Free Energy plays a hook-laden brand of power-pop that never
sounds too horribly dated. It’s not the indie, Big Star version of
power-pop loved by so many critics, though; instead, Scott Wells and the
rest of this feisty quintet make songs like “Dream City” and “Bang Pop”
that sound like The Romantics covering AC/DC. It’s a fascinating sound
from an unassuming group of guys. Same goes for NYC’s The Postelles, a
foursome that doesn’t carry the same punch as Free Energy, but still has
a heady pop-rock charm. Dallas’ own The Background open up tonight’s
proceedings with its own take on riff-heavy rock and pop. Despite the
boring handle, this local trio is definitely worth watching.
