Memorial Day is upon us once again, and this weekend, Dallas is providing countless avenues to honor those who died serving our country.
As is the American way, some of these events’ connections to veterans and patriotism are a little, shall we say, abstract. But we still believe they are worthy ways to spend your holiday.
So, whether you’re looking for a way to entertain your kids on a day off from school, tap into your more cultured side, or simply get patriotically wasted, here are some Memorial Day events worth checking out this weekend.
Family Fun Weekend at the Dallas Arboretum
May 24 – 26
8525 Garland Road
In general, the Arboretum is a beautiful way for families to spend their days off. And though the lush greenspace usually has a permanent place on lists like this, the Memorial Day programming is a welcome bonus. Beginning Friday, each day kicks off with a petting zoo in the morning, tours of the historic DeGolyer house in the afternoon, and lunch from the Arboretum’s Garden Chef Series in the afternoon. More information and tickets can be found on the Arboretum’s website.
Waterproof Pool Party at The Statler
May 25, 1 p.m. – 2 a.m.
1914 Commerce St., Floor 19
Memorial Day is widely considered the beginning of summer, so what better way to spend it than by a pool? And since we’ve all agreed that the pool is the place to be as the sweltering Dallas heat nears, why not go all out with a rooftop pool party at the historic Statler Hotel, complete with drinks, music and a stunning view of Downtown Dallas? Sounds like a killer start to the summer to us. This event is 21 and up. General admission is free and VIP tickets cost $117. More information can be found on Eventbrite.
Red, White and Blue Pub Crawl
May 24
333 S. Harwood St.
What’s more American than turning any holiday into an excuse to drink? This journey through several downtown bars, including Harwood Tavern, Green Door Public Salute, Frankie’s Downtown and Pegasus City, might have you literally crawling by the end of it if you’re not careful. But as long as you’re able to raise your arm high enough to wave a flag we fight for, you should be fine. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased on the event’s website.
Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Parks Concerts
May 26, 8:15 p.m.
8015 Doran Circle
The DSO has spent its summers providing free concerts in Dallas’ parks for 25 years and the series always begins on Memorial Day. This year, the musicians will be taking over Flag Pole Hill near White Rock Lake with a selection of patriotic songs, a pre-show concert from The Rob Holbert Band, and a grand fireworks finale. More information (including protocol for any inclement weather) can be found on the DSO’s website.
On the Town at the Angelika Film Center
May 26, 7 p.m.
5321 E. Mockingbird Lane, No. 230
It’s only fitting that the Memorial Day installment of the Angelika’s Musical Monday series centers on men in uniform. In this 1949 classic, Frank Sinatra, Jules Munshin and Gene Kelly (who also directs and choreographs) play sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City. Comedy, romance and fancy footwork ensue. This one is perfect for friend groups of three who have the holiday to thank for their first shared day off in weeks. Tickets cost $16.19 and are available on the Angelika’s website.
