The 43rd day of the government shutdown could be its last, with the House of Representatives set to vote on a Senate-approved spending bill on Wednesday afternoon. Regardless of how the congressional vote goes, however, airlines across the country are still expected to cancel flights to reduce air traffic by up to 10% later this week, as ordered last week by the FAA.
Thousands of flights have been canceled since Friday, with hundreds of them originating from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Love Field. Although the government reopening will provide immediate relief in some realms, airline travel will not be one of them, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. He repeated on Tuesday that, should the government not reopen immediately, the busy Thanksgiving travel week will likely be affected.
As of Wednesday morning, dozens of flight cancellations have been announced for both Dallas area airports for Wednesday and Thursday. According to FlightAware’s “misery map,” Dallas is among the leaders in the number of delays and cancellations alongside New York City. Washington, D.C., Boston and Atlanta.
