Kacey Musgraves is back and ready to show fans a good time. Like, really ready. Please let her show you a good time.

The eight-time Grammy-winning artist and Texas native released a new single titled “Dry Spell” on Wednesday and announced her sixth studio album, Middle of Nowhere, out later this spring. Both the Western imagery on the album cover and featured artists (which include Texas greats like Willie Nelson and Miranda Lambert) tease a return to form for Musgraves, who made a name for herself in country music before branching out into pop and folk-infused sounds on critically acclaimed albums like Golden Hour and Deeper Well.

Speaking of teasing, “Dry Spell,” a song about being “lonely with a capital H,” showcases some of Musgraves’ funniest and raunchiest songwriting to date, including quips like “ain’t nobody’s tool up in my shed” and a frank confession to “sitting on the washing machine.”

Editor's Picks

The song’s music video lives up to the humorous potential of the lyrics. While shopping at a typical small-town Texas grocery store, Musgraves, wearing a hoodie, athletic shorts and socks with sandals, faces reminders of what’s currently lacking from her life everywhere she turns: eggplants, glazed donuts, cartons of “orgy juice” and displays of fruit that appear to be getting more action than she is. Accidentally bumping into a store employee is enough to spark fantasies of windblown hair and romance novel cover-style caressing. Yes, she’s so down bad, it’s that kind of dry spell.

Between Musgraves, Sabrina Carpenter and Megan Thee Stallion, we appear to be in a golden age of prominent female artists across different genres being explicitly, unapologetically horny. Musgraves may be experiencing a dry spell, but music certainly isn’t where she’s concerned. Count us among the satisfied.

“Dry Spell” is available now on all major streaming platforms. Middle of Nowhere will be released on May 1.
