As Ferris Bueller famously said, “life moves pretty fast.” North Texas residents don’t need to be told the same applies to changes in the weather.
Even though spring is often temperamental around these parts, we might be in for a record-breaking bit of “weather whiplash” this weekend. The near-freezing temps of earlier this week will be a roasty-toasty memory by the time Friday brings its summer-iffic heat.
March madness, indeed.
On Wednesday, WFAA weather guru and chief meteorologist Pete Delkus wrote on X that “this weekend will feel more like summer than spring. Highs will generally trend warmer than normal through the end of the month with mostly rain-free conditions.” But that tweet doesn’t sound like a sexy, record-breaking proclamation.
The folks over at the National Weather Service in Fort Worth add a bit of sizzle to their forecast though. Under the headline “Record Breaking Warmth This Weekend,” the NWS says that “Temperatures will climb above normal by midweek, with widespread highs in the 90s expected this weekend (more than 20 degrees above average for this time of year). Be sure to stay hydrated and take breaks if spending time outdoors.”
Fox 4 dashes a bit of heat onto the proceedings noting that “Highs are forecast to skyrocket into the mid-90s by the weekend, potentially shattering March records while maintaining an elevated fire threat due to dry vegetation and low humidity.”
To be clear, unless temps soar above 100 degrees, which is not being predicted, we will not see a record-breaking March high temperature, but the “weather whiplash” that 20 to 25 degree swing Fox 4 describes could be the largest Dallas has ever seen in March. Saturday and Sunday, specifically, look to be absolute roller coasters.
“While mornings will start in the 60s, afternoons will quickly top out in the mid-90s,” Fox 4 reports. “Relief arrives early next week as a weak front stalls Monday, eventually moving far enough south to help drop temperatures back into the 80s.”
