Just because a troupe has the word “theater” in its title doesn’t mean it actually has a theater to perform in, let alone any kind of permanent venue. That’s one of the driving ideas behind the Festival of Independent Theatres, now in its 14th year of promoting Dallas’ dramatically inclined institutions. The festival is made up of established plays as well as emerging productions and includes such companies as the Echo Theatre, Rite of Passage Theatre Company, Upstart Productions and many more. The genres are wide ranging and varied, running from FTP Comedy’s 2012: The Last Comedy Show, an apocalyptic action spoof, to a character-driven exploration of spirituality in New Horizons Theatre’s Conversations with God and Other Women I’ve Known. Friday night’s performance, which begins at 8, includes The Last Comedy Show along with Dead of Night, a suspense thriller produced by Churchmouse Productions. The four-week festival runs through August 4 at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther Drive. Single tickets start at $18.
