Any driver on the road whose car sports a rosary on the rear-view or a Jesus fish on the bumper would be envious of Joseph Daun’s ride, a zippy, motorized crucifix lined with Madonna-blue neon lights. You won’t see it parked in front of Dallas’ mega churches, but instead at the Kirk Hopper Fine Art’s outdoor gallery. Daun, a Florida-born sculptor, photographer and instillation artist, uses his work to address larger, universal questions. Cross Kart, then, is more than just a pun on the crosskart motor sport. Inspiration for the project comes from his days teaching at a small Baptist college. He says he saw how people expressed their faith, noting the continual competition to be a “better Christian” and used that as inspiration for his race-ready icon. To prove the cart isn’t just for looks, the artist has scheduled a performance demonstrating his righteous racer’s capabilities. Cross Kart is on display noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday through September 24 at Kirk Hopper Fine Art, 3008 Commerce St. The artist performance takes place 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
