Tommy Davidson got his start on In Living Color, but he was somewhat overshadowed by the show’s more uproarious comics as he played straight man to Homey D. Clown or a victim to Fire Marshal Bill’s pyromania. Since then, however, he’s abandoned the madcap antics of the hit-or-miss sketch comedy show for more intellectual, highbrow fare such as Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Booty Call and Juwanna Mann. His role in the latter, as “rapper extraordinaire” Puff Smokey Smoke, truly shows his ability to delve deep into a character, with his attraction to the cross-dressing Jamal/Juwanna character clearly symbolic of both characters’ conflicted sexualities. Ah, if only the filmmakers had the courage to follow through and let the relationship develop. Maybe someday a director’s cut will surface with a Juwanna-Smokey marriage as the alternate ending. Davidson performs Thursday through Sunday at The Addison Improv, 4980 Belt Line Road. Tickets are $22. Call 972-404-8501 or visit improv.com for tickets and showtimes.

Thu., Feb. 19; Fri., Feb. 20; Sat., Feb. 21; Sun., Feb. 22, 2009
