For many of us, growing up in our parents’ shadows meant contending with the legacies of bankers or salesmen, doctors or lawyers. Mimi Clark Gronlund had larger shoes to fill. Her father was Tom C. Clark, the Dallas-born Supreme Court justice appointed by Harry Truman. The 90th Supreme Court Justice, Clark ruled the bench for 18 years. Before that, he served as U.S. attorney general. Gronlund, whose brother Ramsey also served as attorney general, spent decades researching her father’s career while working as a reference librarian at the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. The resulting book, A Life of Service: Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark, explores his role during crucial times in history such as the Civil Rights Movement.
