Ray Charles sang about ’em, which led Kanye West to rap about ’em. Gold diggers plague our society, but it’s like my grandmother always says, “It’s just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as a poor man.” In her new exhibition at Caldwell Arte Exposicion, local artist Mikki Mallow explores our societal obsession with all that glitters. Her paintings in Golddigger delve into concepts of richness, luxury, vanity, love, greed, desire and chaos. Each of her works is laced with the colors of gold, attempting to question the historical value placed on obtaining wealth and riches. According to Mallow, there’s a sense of “gold fever” in this opulent collection of work. One of the newest galleries in the Design District, Caldwell Arte Exposicion, 103 Howell St., presents contemporary artwork. The opening reception for Golddigger takes place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday and entry is free.

Thu., March 6, 7:30-9 p.m., 2014
