We remember the very first Art Conspiracy way back in 2005, when it was held in the Texas Theatre and we were able to land a sweet painting of a grinning bandito for only $20, because no one else could see the value in it (suckers!). Five years later, Art Conspiracy is back with the same tried and true concept–120 local artists get 24 hours to decorate 18″-by-18″ plywood canvases in the manner of their choosing. Then the paintings are auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting a deserving local charity. Between auctions, some of the best bands in North Texas play for the assembled crowd, with the revelry and inevitable drunkenness generally culminating in an aggressive bidding war during the last auction, no matter whether the paintings are good or not (but hey, at least it’s for charity). This year’s Art Conspiracy takes place a little earlier in the fall, so you can leave those scarves and hats at home. It all goes down 7 p.m. Saturday at 511 W. Commerce St., with sets by Ishi, Seryn and Dem Southernfolkz. KXT-FM (91.7) DJ Paul Slavens will hold down the fort as the evening’s master of ceremonies.
