If you’re unfamiliar with Art Conspiracy, it’s kind of like a street gang of creative do-gooders on the brink of revolution. Its mainframe rests underground in an undisclosed location, busily engineering elaborate events that raise cash for local non-profits rooted in the arts. Since 2005, AC has raised more than $140,000 for these organizations by throwing an annual giant bash called Art Con, hinged around art auctions. It’s one of the biggest philanthropic events of the year — because it’s rad — and organizing the thing is one hell of a production.
This Saturday, the legion presents RZN8, a fundraiser for Art Con 8. The organizers have given thirty local artists speakers to base work around; it’s up to the individual to determine how to utilize the device in their submission. I’m curious to see what our Dallas crew comes up with, be it technological or abstract. Expect a pretty heated auction: There’s a strong stable of artists on task for the affair. (Read: wear body armor and bring money. Bids start at $20.)
I know what you’re thinking: “How can I make a solid art decision, sober? No worries. Gabe over at Black Swan is creating a special cocktail for the night. Considering that a standard-issue drink from our favorite mixologist is enough to make you hear in color, this RZN8, limited edition, cocktail will serve as your artistic divining rod.
Since no rager is complete without music, you’ll get an earful from bands Kirby Brown, Spook Easy and Home by Hovercraft. In the lounge you’ll absorb robotic beats by Datahowler, coupled with 8-bit wall projections. Basically, it’s going to be huge. Ten bucks gets you in. Pay at the door, or get your ticket in advance here. The bash goes from 7 p.m. until midnight at Life in Deep Ellum (2803 Taylor Street), but that art you take home? That’s yours forever.
