He’s best known for his “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television,” but George Carlin’s routines on poor language have always been my favorites. Gripes such as, “What the hell is pre-board? Get on before you get on?” and “Get on the plane? Fuck you, I’m getting in the plane,” should be required viewing for English majors and flight attendants. He rightfully lampoons evasive language too. His observation that “Language is a tool for concealing the truth,” is uncomfortably, well, true. Ironically, he was chewed out by a language nerd about one of his own wording mistakes, a redundancy in his “Seven Words” bit: seems “Motherfucker” and “fuck” contain the same offending word. But Carlin didn’t try to obfuscate that; in fact, he acknowledged the gaffe in future variations. Considering he’s had three heart attacks and been to rehab for blow, booze and pills, you ought to catch this tour in case he…ah, I can’t bring myself to write it, so I’ll use one of his despised euphemisms…”expires” before his next tour.
