Remember when you were younger and you took your sisters’ Barbie dolls only to return them in compromising positions? Well if you cleaned that up a little bit, inserted vintage ’60s backdrops behind them and then took a picture, then you’ve pretty much created the works in Davis Parise’s Vintage exhibit, showing now at the RISING Gallery, 4631 Insurance Lane. You’ll find the Ken that had Barbie wondering where he went at night, spending so much time with his new “friend.” And the more realistically the dolls are portrayed, the creepier they are. Along with what amounts to a Barbie family slide show, Debbie Curtis’ colorful sketches of the early Barbie appear on a variety of mediums. The paintings look like old drawn portraits as Curtis tries to play with the iconography of the time. Basically, if you’ve ever been obsessed with Barbie dolls or vintage ’60s culture then you’ll find something to like here. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays , 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Mondays by appointment. The exhibit ends on July 31.
