Brooklyn- and Dallas-based painter Michelle Mackey brings her new show Afterglow to town this week. Her paintings use dark and quiet hues and layer upon layer of paint, which mimic layers of memory. Using photographs and drawings as inspiration and source material, Mackey begins the pieces that are based on memories of particular places, many of which are rich with hidden or buried pasts, including, in this current series, a dilapidated Dallas gas station once inhabited by Clyde Barrow’s family. While primarily abstract, Mackey’s paintings are inhabited by purely representational images: doors, windows, hallways, all illuminated by light as a subtle glowing source. See them at the Holly Johnson Gallery, 1411 Dragon St. The opening reception is 6 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit will be on display through May 10.
