A few weeks back on City of Ate, the Dallas Observer‘s food blog, an off-the-cuff Tweet admonishing parents who take their children into bars sparked a spirited online discussion. Some readers claimed that taking kids to such establishments is an acceptable way to spend time with the family, while others believed it’s a sign of horrible parenting and a nuisance to fellow drinkers. As far as I’m concerned, it depends on the bar. Little Susie doesn’t need to see Mommy holding a cigarette in one hand while using the other to drunkenly rub the waxed chest of some guy she just met on the Ghostbar dance floor. But surely there’s nothing wrong with having a beer or two at a biergarten while the kids enjoy a soft drink and some fried food. And Addison Oktoberfest is basically one giant biergarten, except with carnival rides, dachshund races, midway games, a car show and more. The festival is Thursday through Sunday at Addison Circle Park, 4970 Addison Circle Drive. Entrance is $5 for ages 4 and older, and free Thursday. Event schedule and more information are at addisontexas.net.
