The Harlem Globetrotters were originally named the “Savoy Big Five,” and the team was founded in 1926 in Chicago by Abe Saperstein. That’s right, Chicago. They didn’t actually play a game in Harlem until 42 years later, in 1968. Also, they played pretty serious basketball, honing the tricks and routines they are famous for today, but using them only when they were holding a strong lead. When the NBA broke the color barrier in 1950, Saperstein had trouble holding onto players, and the team starting leaning more toward entertainment. The Globetrotters have been letting the good times roll for 82 years, and they show no sign of slowing down. Don’t miss the fun when they bounce into Dallas this weekend for three shows at American Airlines Center, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
