Inspired by stories of early blues guitarists making their own glass slides, we tried a few times to fashion our own from empty wine bottles using their technique. The idea is to soak a string in kerosene, wrap it around the bottleneck, ignite it and dunk the flaming bottle into cold water, whereupon the glass cracks neatly along the string. Predictably, we ended up with singed or cut fingers rather than a usable slide every time. But now that Oil and Cotton’s Shannon Driscoll is teaching how to turn Topo Chico bottles into drinking glasses in an Oil & Cotton workshop, which includes an Ephram’s bottle-cutting kit to take home, we may give slide-making another shot- Topo Chico bottles have necks, too. Class is 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and costs $65. Register online at oilandcotton.com.
