Every time the lease runs out, you dream of finding a real community to call home, rather than just a roof overhead. You know, like Melrose Place, but minus the catfights and STD scares. It’d be awesome to walk out your front door and feel the love from your neighbors, to work with them to achieve common goals and to have a sense of place that fosters creativity. The denizens of Deep Ellum’s Continental Gin Building, 3309 Elm St., have just that, and then some. This artist-occupied building has housed some of this city’s most creative minds over the past 25 years, and to celebrate that anniversary it will open its doors from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and again from 2 until 8 p.m. Saturday for the Artist Open Studios. Tour the 120-year old building and view diverse work from the sculptors, interior designers, photographers, painters, film producers, fashion mavens and other inhabitants of this unique artistic community.
