Remember when stranger danger was a thing? You know–when approached by someone you didn’t know, you were supposed to book it after-school special style. Maybe stranger danger is still taught, but you wouldn’t know it: we leave our social media accounts open for people we’ve never met to browse through, or meet up with total strangers for dates. It seems like we’re now tangentially connected to everyone in someway, and we’re comfortable making social encounters from scratch. It’s that paradigm that makes the retrospective of Dallas artist Maryanne Meltzer’s prints and paintings at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy Street, so interesting. Strangers: The Art of Maryanne Meltzer examines themes of alienation and the nature of human interaction, as portrayed with bold forms and an almost tangible undercurrent of uneasiness—such a contrast to current attitudes toward the unfamiliar. The exhibit opens with a reception from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday and will remain on display through Saturday, August 30. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; admission is free.
Fri., Aug. 15, 6-9 p.m.; Mondays-Saturdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Starts: Aug. 15. Continues through Aug. 30, 2014
