It never occurred to me that chess was a contact sport. Recently I was shocked to find out my Catholic school nephew got in a fight with another boy—in his chess club. How could this happen? Was a threefold repetition not going to cut it? Did one call the other a patzer or did a zugzwang go wrong? Turns out it was just a dare. The family pride is still intact, though, since it was the other boy who started it. Can’t imagine anything like that happening at Chess Quest!, where people of all skill levels are invited to practice and play. There are even classes for learning the basics and maybe even some of the terminology. Chess Quest! is held every Tuesday at the Hampton-Illinois Branch Library, 2951 S. Hampton Road, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 214-670-7646.
