If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to step into a snow globe of holiday cheer, the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine has your answer.

This year, the resort’s iconic ICE! experience celebrates its 21st season with a frosty homage to the 2003 holiday classic Elf, starring Will Ferrell. Featuring more than two million pounds of hand-carved ice sculptures, six ice slides and a heartwarming dose of Buddy the Elf’s infectious spirit, this North Pole of Texas is a must-see for families, film buffs and anyone looking to rekindle their Christmas magic, even in 80-degree North Texas fall weather.

“We chose Elf because it’s a fan favorite that resonates with visitors of all ages,” says Martha Neibling, director of marketing and public relations at Gaylord Texan. “The humor and heart of the movie make it a perfect fit for creating those special holiday memories.” And create memories it does.

Spanning 17,500 square feet, ICE! is a walk-through wonderland that brings the most iconic scenes from Elf to life. From the moment you step into the 9-degree attraction, you’re greeted by Buddy the Elf’s infectious spirit. The journey begins in an elf classroom, where Buddy sits in the back row, grinning ear to ear. Visitors can pose at the desks and declare themselves “not a cotton-headed ninny muggins” before moving on to scenes that feel plucked straight from the movie.

This glowing ice sculpture is just one of the many Elf-themed scenes you’ll find at ICE! — crafted from over two million pounds of ice.

The attention to detail is nothing short of magical. The gum-stuck subway railing, the shoeshine station and even the maple syrup-drenched spaghetti dinner are all recreated in vibrant, frozen detail.

“The artisans from Harbin, China, are truly spectacular at what they do,” Neibling says. “They spend 30 to 45 days carving these intricate sculptures, using simple food coloring to bring the ice to life. It’s amazing to watch them work.”

One of the most memorable installations is the mailroom scene, complete with a dancing Buddy and pipes carved out of ice to send letters to Santa. Overhead, letters float as if by magic, while Tag Team’s “Whoomp! (There It Is)” plays, making it impossible not to smile. And then there’s the iconic revolving door moment, where visitors can snap a photo that makes it look like they’re spinning alongside Buddy. It’s these immersive touches that make ICE! more than just a display.

Of course, no visit to ICE! is complete without a ride down the five two-story ice slides. This year, the slides feature a new shape, adding a fresh twist to the tradition.

“We change the décor and design around the slides each year to keep it exciting,” Neibling explains. For adults needing a warm-up, the ice bar offers themed drinks like a banana bread old fashioned — a perfect way to toast the season.

“It’s a huge hit for bigger kids, teenagers and adults,” Neibling says. “In North Texas, tubing isn’t something you typically get to experience, so it’s a thrill for everyone.”

For $20, you can slide to your heart’s content, and on quieter days, you might even squeeze in 20 runs.

The Snowball Build & Blast area is another unique attraction, where kids can craft their own snowballs and toss them into colorful, jingling targets. While the activity is more geared toward younger children, it’s a fun way to engage with real snow — just don’t forget your gloves, or you’ll be feeling the chill in no time.

For those who prefer a more traditional winter pastime, the ice-skating rink offers a serene escape. And if you’re looking to keep the holiday magic alive, the Christmas carousel and gingerbread decorating workshops are sure to delight.

A Winter Wonderland for All Ages

The Gaylord Texan’s holiday offerings extend beyond the ticketed attractions. The resort’s main lobby is a spectacle in itself, with two million lights, a 54-foot-tall Christmas tree and 25-foot toy soldiers creating a dazzling display. Miniature train sets and gingerbread houses add to the charm, making it an ideal spot for a family photo — or even a Christmas card, if you’re the procrastinating type.

If it’s your first time visiting ICE!, Neibling has some advice: “Dress warmly! We provide complimentary parkas, but hats, gloves and boots are a must, especially for little ones.” She also recommends booking a holiday staycation to fully immerse yourself in the experience. “Staying overnight lets you enjoy everything, from the restaurants and bars to the spa. And for day visitors, the bundle packages offer great value.”

One thing to keep in mind is the cost. Between parking, tickets and activities, a family outing can easily exceed $200. But for those looking to save, simply exploring the resort’s free decorations and light displays is a magical experience in itself.
