What is a hyperpower? According to Amy Chua, right now, the United States is. But, it’s one threatened without a change in “tolerance.” Her bestselling book Day of Empire: How Hyperpowers Rise to Global Dominance–And Why They Fall, compares even ancient empires such as Persia and the Roman Empire to the US in what seems to be a very timely warning. It’s a thought-provoking read–scholarly but accessible–more appropriate for the leather armchair than the poolside chaise, if you know what I mean. Chua discusses her work Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Fort Worth Public Library, 500 W. 3rd St., (tickets are $10) and at 6 p.m. at the Dallas Central Library, 1515 Young St. (tickets $25 to $40). Visit dfwworld.org for tickets and info.

Tue., March 10, 6 p.m., 2009
