As a kid, when I first heard of The Vagina Monologues, I assumed what any reasonable person would: that the show features people dancing around in costumes that resemble female sex organs. Perhaps, I thought, the performance has a kick-line or two, with big musical numbers and fireworks during the finale. (In case you were wondering, it doesn’t. And that’s probably for the best.) Then I saw the Monologues performed two years ago in Austin, and I learned what all the fuss was about: I laughed, I cried and I heard more talk about vaginas than ever before. The only thing that disappointed me about the production was that so few males showed up to watch. You would think this particular subject matter would interest some of the menfolk. Personally, I recommend people of both sexes check out UTD’s annual presentation of the Monologues, which will also include raffles and food. Shows are 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (with an additional performance 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday night) at the Jonsson Performance Hall, 800 West Campbell Road on the UTD campus. Tickets are $8 ($6 for students) and can be purchased at the door. All proceeds go to the local charity Victims Outreach to support victims of violence. Call 936-525-7637.
