In the world of cinema, the word “classic” is thrown around so easily. A movie that came out last week can be easily touted as an instant classic. Brokeback Mountain, anyone? Year-old movies can be destined for such distinction through the apparent wisdom handed to us by critics and Oscars. Fortunately for us, the Lone Star Film Society has a good grip on reality with their Classics at the Modern series. From the obvious (Casablanca) to the timely (last month’s original King Kong) to the gems (Touch of Evil), audiences can enjoy these oldies but goodies in all their big-screen glory. So why are they showing a forgettable movie about a boy and his loser horse that’s sure to win the race and save the day? Be sure to ask cowboy legend Tuff Hedeman as he presents Walter Matthau in 1978’s Casey’s Shadow, directed by Martin Ritt (Hud, Norma Rae).
