It’s going to take a humorously large amount of pies to make it happen, but on July 31st, three different clowning contingents will unite over a love of grand-scale slapstick in front of the American Airlines Center. You’re invited to participate, which means your life has finally turned out exactly as planned. Congratulations.
The world record for pieing was once reserved for custard-based humiliation, and is currently held by Drake University with 684 of the suckers launched on April 9, 2011. Due to concerns regarding food waste — because somewhere, baby clowns are starving — Guinness has now changed the substrate to shaving cream, which thankfully, is still hysterical. The event is being put on by the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey clowning crew, the Children’s Medial Center’s Funnyatrics therapy clowns and the Lewisville Life and Fire Safety Clowns, who will inevitably all show up in one, very tiny car and then proceed to put out a fire with a bucket of confetti.
The event kicks off “International Clown Week,” which has been honored every August 1 to 9th since Richard Nixon proclaimed it as such back in 1971. It’s also a fundraiser for the two participating non-profit clowning charities. Most importantly, it’s a chance for you to throw not a few, but hundreds and hundreds of homemade shaving cream pies at your friends and loved ones. Don’t be concerned if this is your first attempt at mass pie assault: Ringling Bros. sent us a list of pieing methods so you can study up in advance.
Simple Pie – Pieing someone by smushing the pie into someone face using your dominant hand.
Double Pie – Pieing someone using two pies simultaneously.
Revenge Pie – Pieing someone after you’ve been pied.
The Simultaneous Pie – Pieing someone as they are pieing you.
The Pie Launch – Chucking a pie at an opponent.
The Sandwich Pie – You and a friend pie someone from both sides at the same time.
The Multi Pie – When two people constantly pie one person.
The Flip-Up Pie – When you flip someone’s hand that is carrying a pie so that they pie themselves.
The Full Body Pie – When someone is covered from head to toe with pies
Here’s a little video inspiration. (It really picks up around the 2 minute mark.) To participate, you must be at least 12 years old and register in advance here. Throwing pies is completely free.
