There is something undeniably inspiring and unifying about dance films. Footloose, Saturday Night Fever, Flashdance, You Got Served (that last one is obviously a joke…hopefully)…you get the idea. A film deserving classification amongst these on the great list of moving dance films is Dancing Across Borders, a film that will arrive in the metroplex Friday at the Magnolia at the Modern series at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. This behind-the-scenes-story, directed by filmmaker and dance world devotee Anne Bass, chronicles a Cambodian 16-year-old boy’s journey from his home in Southeast Asia to the world of ballet in New York City and then on to Seattle. His life and how it is changed as he travels the road to a dream he slowly but surely comes to realize, captures all of the things really good dance films do–recognition, liberation and redemption. The film opens Friday with showings at 6 and 8 p.m., continues Saturday with a showing at 5 p.m. followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Anne Bass, and finishes up Sunday with showings at 2 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $8.50 or $6.50 for Modern members.
